Israeli officials in Jerusalem reportedly believe that there is a high probability that US President Donald Trump will announce in the coming days an official recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, an announcement that will likely indicate a US embassy transfer is underway.

According to speculation in Israel, it is believed that Trump does not want to wait for a policy plan as he does not want to sign the waiver postponing the embassy transfer, which has been signed by his predecessors. Trump is also likely facing pressures from his evangelical supporters, who would like for him to keep his campaign promise.

As previously reported by JOL, yesterday (Tuesday), the UN marked 70 years since the General Assembly adopted the resolution historic partition plan towards the independence of Jewish and Arab states. US Vice President Mike Pence spoke at the event and stated that Trump is “actively considering” moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. During his speech, Pence expressed his country’s commitment to Israel and said that the negative attitude Israel received at the UN has significantly ended thanks to US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley.

“The Jewish people have a natural, irrevocable right to an independent state in their ancestral and eternal homeland,” Pence said. “Under Trump, America stands with Israel because her values are our values and her fight is our fight. President Trump demonstrates our unwavering commitment and I will reaffirm that when me and my family visit next month. I will address members of Knesset and pay our respects at Yad Vashem.”
